What is car remapping?

Your car's engine control unit (ECU) is the brain behind every performance parameter, fuelling, ignition timing, boost pressure, torque limits. The software that governs these parameters is set at the factory, but factory settings are rarely optimised for your engine's full potential.

Manufacturers routinely produce the same engine in several power tiers. A 150 bhp and a 200 bhp variant may share identical hardware, the difference is the software. On top of that, a single map has to satisfy emissions regulations across multiple markets and account for the lowest grade of fuel a driver might put in the tank. The result is a car that is deliberately held back.

Car remapping rewrites those parameters to suit your actual vehicle, your fuel, and your goals. Done properly, a remap unlocks the performance the engine was always capable of delivering.

How we do it differently

Most remapping operations load a generic map file sourced from a database, push it to your ECU via the OBD port, and call it done. There is no measurement before. No measurement after. No way to know what the car is actually producing on your fuel, in your conditions.

At Manchester Dyno Centre, every remap is developed on our 4-wheel-drive Bapro dynamometer and verified against real power and torque figures. We measure the car before we touch the ECU. We build the map. We measure it again. You leave with documented before-and-after figures, not a promise.

Our lead tuner Samuel Gunnell has over ten years of automotive software programming experience. We use Kess3 and CMD tooling, covering both OBD port remapping and bench tuning for cases where the ECU needs to be removed and programmed directly.

We work on petrol and diesel vehicles. If you are looking for remapping near you in Manchester or across the North West, our Eccles, Manchester facility is easy to reach from across the motorway network.

Remapping services

We offer a range of automotive remapping options depending on your vehicle and your objectives.

Stage 1 remapping, A single-component remap optimised for a standard car on pump fuel. Typically the first step for any performance or economy gain.

Stage 2 remapping, Developed for cars running hardware upgrades such as a performance exhaust or induction kit. The map is built around the modified specification.

Economy remapping, Recalibrated for improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing everyday drivability. Suited to high-mileage drivers and fleet vehicles.

Gearbox remapping, Shift points, torque limiters, and launch behaviour adjusted to complement an engine remap or improve transmission response on its own.

Each service is quoted individually. Contact us for pricing specific to your vehicle.

We do not publish fixed prices because every remap is built for the vehicle in front of us. Call us on 0161 302 5117 or visit us at HNA Facilities, Plot Zero, James Nasmyth Way, Eccles, Manchester M30 0SF to discuss your car and what you want to achieve.

Frequently asked questions

What is car remapping?
Car remapping is the process of reprogramming the software in your vehicle's engine control unit (ECU). The ECU controls fuelling, timing, boost pressure and other performance parameters. Manufacturers set these conservatively to cover multiple markets and power variants. A remap adjusts those parameters to suit your specific vehicle, unlocking performance or efficiency gains that the original software was suppressing.
How much does car remapping cost?
The cost of a remap depends on the vehicle, the tuning stage, and whether OBD or bench tuning is required. We do not publish a fixed price list because we build every map individually rather than loading generic files. Contact us on 0161 302 5117 for a quote specific to your car.
Is car remapping safe?
Yes, when carried out by experienced tuners using professional equipment. At Manchester Dyno Centre, every map is developed and verified on our 4WD Bapro dyno, so we measure real output before and after. We do not guess at figures. Samuel Gunnell has over a decade of automotive software programming experience, and we use industry-standard Kess3 and CMD tooling for all OBD and bench tuning work.
How long does a remap take?
Most stage 1 remaps can be completed within a few hours. Bench tuning, where the ECU is removed and programmed off the vehicle, may take longer depending on the complexity of the work. We will give you a time estimate when you book your appointment.
