Gearbox and transmission remapping

When you remap the engine, the gearbox needs to know about it. A gearbox remap, also called a TCU remap, updates the transmission control unit separately from the engine ECU, so the two work together rather than against each other. At Manchester Dyno Centre, we carry out TCU remapping on DSG, ZF8, and DCT gearboxes, developed and verified on our 4WD Bapro dynamometer.

What is a gearbox remap?

Your engine and gearbox are controlled by separate units. The engine ECU handles fuelling, boost and ignition. The transmission control unit, the TCU, manages everything the gearbox does: when it shifts, how fast, how firm, and how much torque it will allow to pass through.

A gearbox remap writes directly to the TCU, adjusting the parameters the manufacturer set for longevity across a broad range of driving conditions and markets. The changes we make typically include:

  • Shift speed and shift firmness
  • Torque limits (the ceiling the gearbox will accept from the engine)
  • Rev-match points between upshifts and downshifts
  • Torque converter lock-up behaviour
  • Launch and kickdown response

The result is a gearbox that shifts faster, handles torque more confidently, and responds in a way that matches how the car actually drives.

Why you need a gearbox remap after an engine remap

This is the part most people do not think about until it causes a problem. When you carry out a Stage 1 or Stage 2 engine remap, the engine produces more torque than it did from the factory. The TCU does not know this has happened. It is still operating to its original torque limit, which means one of two things: the gearbox slips as it struggles to cope with torque it was not told to expect, or it simply refuses to let the engine reach its full potential.

Neither outcome is what you want after investing in a remap.

A TCU remap raises the gearbox torque limit to match what the engine is now producing, so the gains from the engine tune are not being capped or worn away by a gearbox still living in stock mode. If you have remapped the engine, updating the gearbox at the same visit is the logical next step.

Gearboxes we work with

We carry out gearbox tuning across a wide range of transmission types. The most common applications we see are:

DSG, Volkswagen's dual-clutch gearbox, fitted across the VAG group including Golf, Audi A3 and S3, Skoda Octavia vRS, and Seat Cupra. The DQ250 and DQ381 are the most frequent. Full DSG remap details.

ZF8, The eight-speed automatic used across BMW's petrol and diesel line-up, including the 3 Series, 5 Series, M340i, and X5. A BMW gearbox remap on the ZF8 transforms the driving experience in a way the engine remap alone cannot replicate.

The most efficient approach is to book an engine remap and gearbox remap together. Both the ECU and TCU can be updated in a single visit, and because we develop every calibration on our 4WD Bapro dynamometer, the two files are verified against real measured power figures before the car leaves the bay.

Do I need a gearbox remap with a Stage 1?

A TCU remap raises that ceiling to match the engine's new output and lets the two systems work together properly.
