Manufacturers deliberately detune them to meet fuel economy targets, emissions compliance, and service interval requirements, which means the engine sitting under your bonnet is capable of considerably more than it delivers from the factory.

A diesel remap unlocks that headroom. At Manchester Dyno Centre, every diesel tune is developed on our 4-wheel-drive Bapro dynamometer, so the gains you see on screen are the gains your car actually produces on the road.

What changes in a diesel remap

Diesel remapping works by rewriting the engine control unit's calibration across four main parameters: injection timing, fuel rail pressure, boost pressure from the turbocharger, and the torque limits the ECU uses to protect the drivetrain.

From the factory, these values are held back. Raising fuel rail pressure and advancing injection timing means more fuel is burned more efficiently per cycle. Increasing boost pressure from the turbo delivers more air to support that fuel. Adjusting the torque limits lets the engine realise what the other changes have made possible. Worked together on a rolling road, these changes produce a calibration that reflects what the engine is genuinely capable of, not what a spreadsheet in a factory decided it should be limited to.

The result is an engine that feels different from the moment you pull away. Diesel torque responds exceptionally well to remapping, gains are often substantial, and they arrive lower in the rev range where you actually use them.

Performance or economy, your choice

Diesel tuning isn't one-size-fits-all. We offer two calibration approaches depending on what you want from your vehicle.

Performance remapping prioritises power and torque output. Boost and fuelling are pushed to the engine's safe limits, throttle response is sharpened, and turbo lag is reduced significantly. If you want your 320d to feel like a different car, this is the route.

Economy remapping targets efficiency. The engine is tuned to produce its torque earlier and more smoothly, so you're using less throttle to maintain speed. Many customers report meaningful MPG improvements, particularly on motorway and mixed driving. Vans and commercial vehicles on high-mileage routes often see the strongest economy returns.

Every diesel remap at Manchester Dyno Centre is developed and verified on our 4WD Bapro dynamometer. This isn't a file-flash operation. We put the car on the rollers, measure what it's actually making, refine the calibration in live conditions, and confirm the result before the car leaves the bay.

For most diesel drivers, yes. The gains in torque and throttle response are noticeable in everyday driving, not just under hard acceleration. Economy-focused maps can also reduce running costs over time, particularly for higher-mileage users. The value depends on how you use the car, which is why we discuss your goals before recommending a calibration approach.
How much power can a diesel remap add?
It varies by engine and starting point, but diesel engines typically respond very well, torque gains are often significant because the factory calibration holds back so much. A BMW 320d or Audi TDI that's been properly remapped on a dyno can feel like a substantially different car. We give you before and after dyno figures so the result is verifiable, not guesswork.
Does diesel remapping improve fuel economy?
It can, yes, and this surprises many people. When the engine produces its torque earlier and more efficiently, you need less throttle to achieve the same result. An economy-focused remap is specifically calibrated with this in mind, and drivers who cover significant motorway mileage often see a tangible improvement in MPG. A performance remap may see economy remain similar or improve depending on driving style.
How long does a diesel remap take?
Most diesel remaps are completed within a few hours, including dyno time.
