Volkswagen remapping
Volkswagen's EA888 engine family is one of the most tuneable platforms on the mainstream market. From the Golf GTI to the Golf R, factory maps are held back for market compliance and fuel grade compatibility, adjustments that leave a meaningful amount of power and torque sitting unused in the ECU. At Manchester Dyno Centre, every VW remap is developed and verified on our 4-Wheel-Drive Bapro dynamometer in Eccles, Manchester by Samuel Gunnell, who has over ten years of experience writing calibration files for VAG platforms.
Golf GTI, Golf R and Golf GTD
The Golf GTI is one of the most popular platforms we work with. Built around the EA888 turbocharged petrol, it responds consistently well to Stage 1 remapping. Throttle response sharpens across the rev range, peak power increases, and the torque curve fills out in the mid-range where it makes the biggest difference to everyday driving, all without touching any hardware.
The Golf R takes that further. As a 4Motion all-wheel-drive car, it is one of the few hot hatches that requires a 4WD dyno to verify the tune properly. Our Bapro rolling road loads all four wheels simultaneously, so the calibration is developed under conditions that reflect how the car actually drives. Most facilities cannot do this, AWD cars either get mapped on the road or loaded onto a two-wheel roller with the AWD system partially disabled. We do neither.
Golf R Stage 1 unlocks the additional headroom the EA888 carries in standard form. Stage 2 builds on top of that with hardware support, typically an upgraded intercooler and induction kit, and pushes the platform considerably further. Samuel will walk you through which stage is appropriate for your car based on its current specification.
The Golf GTD is VW's diesel sporting variant and responds to TDI remapping very well. Torque delivery and mid-range pull are the primary gains, the GTD becomes a noticeably stronger car through the speed range where it is driven most. The Polo GTI, which shares EA888 architecture in a smaller and lighter body, is also supported and responds to Stage 1 in a similar way.
DSG tuning alongside the engine remap
Mk7 and Mk8 Golf models use VW's DSG dual-clutch gearbox, and a DSG remap makes a significant difference to how the increased power gets to the road. The standard TCU calibration is conservative: torque limits, gear selection logic and shift speed are all set with headroom left in. Rewriting that calibration removes the headroom.
We carry out DSG remaps alongside the engine remap in the same session. The result is a car that shifts faster, holds gears more intelligently under load, and delivers the increased engine output cleanly, rather than the gearbox backing off the power on sharp upshifts. If you are remapping the engine, it is worth remapping the gearbox at the same time.
VW Transporter remapping
The Transporter T5, T6 and T6.1 are a regular fixture in our workshop. VW's TDI units in the Transporter range are well-suited to remapping, and many of our van customers are tradespeople who want either better fuel economy on high-mileage work routes or more pulling power when running at full payload.
Economy remaps adjust fuelling curves and injection timing to stretch diesel mileage further. Performance remaps increase torque output across the rev range and reduce turbo lag under load. We also work with the VW Caddy, which shares similar mechanicals and benefits from the same approach. Both economy and performance calibrations are available depending on how the vehicle is used.
