The K20C1 and L15B7 across the Civic range

K20C1, Civic Type R FK8 (2017 to 2021)

The FK8-generation Type R runs Honda's K20C1, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 316 bhp from the factory. It replaced the naturally aspirated K20-series engines that built Honda's VTEC reputation through the 1990s and 2000s, and it was the car that reintroduced Type R to UK buyers after a decade away from the market. The factory calibration leaves genuine headroom above that figure, and a properly developed Stage 1 map is where that headroom gets found rather than assumed.

K20C1, Civic Type R FL5 (2022 onwards)

The current FL5 Type R carries the same K20C1 architecture forward, with factory output rising to 325 bhp (UK spec), alongside a revised cooling package and a stiffer chassis. The engine itself is a close relative of the FK8's unit, which means the underlying calibration principles carry over, but the two generations should be treated as distinct remap projects rather than one file applied twice across both cars.

L15B7, Civic 1.5 VTEC Turbo

Away from the Type R, the standard Civic runs Honda's L15B7 (and related L15C) 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 180 to 182 bhp from the factory. It is a smaller, less dramatic tuning platform than the K20C1, but a well-developed Stage 1 remap still delivers a noticeable improvement in throttle response and usable mid-range torque for a car most owners drive every day rather than take to a track. Why Honda remapping needs a specialist

Honda's ECUs, particularly on the K20C1, are not the easiest platform to access on the market, and that is exactly why a generic file downloaded from a forum thread is a real risk here. Samuel Gunnell develops every Honda calibration from a baseline pull specific to that car, reading and writing via Kess3 or CMD bench and OBD tooling at our Eccles facility. This is in-person work only, there is no remote flashing app for Honda on this site, whatever a forum post might claim. A file built around VTEC's own particular boost, fuelling and cam-timing behaviour but calibrated for a different market's fuel grade is not something you want discovered on your own car weeks after fitting. The Type R's turbocharger and factory cooling system are matched precisely to the calibration Honda ships from the factory, and a proper remap respects that relationship rather than working against it, extending the same care to the smaller L15B7 in the standard Civic.

Every service available across the Honda range

Stage 1 is available on both the K20C1 Type R and the L15B7 Civic, developed and verified on our 4WD Bapro dyno rather than estimated from a datasheet. Stage 2 is available on the Type R where supporting hardware, such as an upgraded intercooler or downpipe, is fitted, and we will advise honestly on whether it is worth the investment for how you actually use the car. An economy-focused remap suits Civic owners who want lower running costs from daily driving rather than more power. Standalone rolling road sessions are available for a baseline pull or a post-modification check on either model, useful for owners who have already fitted supporting hardware elsewhere and want a documented figure. For the Type R, a flame tune, pops and bangs on the overrun, can be coded in for private, off-road use.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stage 2 available on the K20C1?
Yes, where supporting hardware such as an upgraded intercooler or downpipe is fitted. We assess your specific Type R's condition and generation, FK8 or FL5, before recommending it rather than pushing it as a default upgrade over Stage 1.
Do you remap the gearbox alongside the engine?
The Type R uses a six-speed manual gearbox with no ECU-flashable transmission control, so there is nothing to remap there. The standard Civic's automatic options currently sit outside our remap scope. Contact us if your specification differs and we will confirm what applies.
How long does a Honda remap take?
A typical Stage 1 session, including baseline pull, mapping and verification runs, takes around half a day at Eccles. We will confirm a realistic timeframe for your specific Civic or Type R when you book.
Will the remap affect the Type R's driving modes?
No. The remap recalibrates the engine's boost, fuelling and ignition strategy. Comfort, Sport and +R continue to adjust throttle response, steering weight and adaptive damping exactly as Honda designed them, sitting on top of the new calibration rather than being altered by it.
Do you cover the Type R Limited Edition as well as the standard car?
Yes. The Limited Edition shares its K20C1 calibration base with the standard Type R, and we develop your map around your specific car's condition and generation regardless of trim.
