What is remote tuning?
Remote tuning, sometimes called platform tuning, is a method of delivering a custom map to your car without it needing to come to our facility. Instead of visiting us in Eccles, Manchester, you install a hardware or software platform on your vehicle yourself. We then develop a map file tailored to your car and send it to you over the internet. You flash it using the platform's own tool, from wherever you are.
The process depends on the platform your car is compatible with. At Manchester Dyno Centre, we work with two: Bootmod3 (BM3) and MHD. Both are BMW-focused solutions with strong reputations among enthusiasts. The platform does the delivery work. The tuning itself is still done by Samuel Gunnell, built specifically for your engine, your fuel, and your setup.
Remote tuning is not a shortcut to a cheap tune. It is a practical alternative for owners who cannot easily travel to Manchester, or who own a platform-compatible BMW and want a professionally developed map without booking a dyno day.
Bootmod3 (BM3)
Bootmod3 is one of the most widely used tuning platforms for modern BMW engines, covering the B58 and B48 families. The customer purchases a BM3 licence and the associated hardware directly from Bootmod3. Once installed, the platform allows you to load and switch between map files using your phone.
Our role is to develop the map. Samuel Gunnell writes a custom file for your specific car, taking into account your fuel grade, any hardware modifications, and your performance objectives. You receive the file and load it yourself via the BM3 app.

MHD
MHD is an OBD-based tuning platform supporting a wider range of BMW engine codes, including the N55, S55, and B58. It is a popular choice for owners of the F-series and G-series M cars as well as the broader turbocharged BMW range. Flashing is done via the OBD port using the MHD app, with no additional hardware required beyond your phone.
As with BM3, we provide the map file. You do the flashing. The map is built by Samuel Gunnell and developed to suit your car's specification and stage of modification.

Platform tuning is only as good as the person writing the map. Many remote tunes are based on shared community files or lightly adjusted base maps, adapted with minimal input from an actual tuner.
Every file we send is written by Samuel Gunnell, who has over ten years of automotive software programming experience and is in demand internationally for the quality of his tuning work. If you are putting a new map on your BMW, it should be one built by someone who has spent years calibrating engines on a 4WD Bapro dynamometer, not someone who has pushed the same file out to hundreds of cars.
