DSG remapping

Your DSG gearbox is controlled by its own separate computer, the transmission control unit (TCU). Like the engine ECU, it runs on a calibration that the manufacturer has tuned for comfort, fuel economy, and a degree of mechanical conservatism. A DSG remap rewrites that calibration, unlocking faster shift speeds, sharper throttle response, and, critically, higher torque limits that allow the gearbox to work properly alongside a remapped engine.

What a DSG remap actually changes

A DSG gearbox remap targets the parameters that govern how the transmission behaves, not just how it shifts. The main areas we work on are:

Shift speed. The stock calibration prioritises smoothness and comfort. A remap tightens shift times considerably, giving you crisper, more immediate gear changes that feel noticeably more mechanical and direct.

Torque limits. This is the part most people overlook. The TCU has hard-coded torque limits that tell the gearbox how much torque it is allowed to receive from the engine. On a standard car those limits are set conservatively. Once you remap the engine, even with a Stage 1 tune, the engine is producing more torque than the gearbox calibration expects, which can cause the TCU to intervene and pull power. A DSG gearbox remap raises those limits so the box can accept the full output of the engine without fighting it.

Torque converter lock-up points. The torque converter lock-up point determines when the converter clutch engages to create a direct mechanical connection between engine and gearbox. Remapping this improves efficiency and responsiveness at speed.

Launch control settings. Where applicable, launch control engagement RPM and clutch slip parameters can be refined to suit the car's power output and intended use.

Why it matters alongside an engine remap

If you are planning a Stage 1 engine remap and your car runs a DSG or S-tronic gearbox, the gearbox remap is not optional, it is the part that makes everything work together properly.

Without it, the TCU will hit its torque ceiling and begin limiting what the engine can deliver. In some cases you will notice hesitation or a flat spot under hard acceleration; in others the car will simply not perform the way the engine remap intended. Pairing a DSG remap with an engine remap ensures both units are calibrated to the same target, and that the power the engine produces is the power you actually feel.

The most common VAG models we work with include the Golf GTI and Golf R, Audi A3, S3, and RS3, Skoda Octavia vRS, Seat Leon, and Cupra models, all of which run DSG or S-tronic transmissions as standard.

Where possible we carry out the engine remap and DSG remap in the same session, keeping the car off the road for less time and ensuring both calibrations are signed off together on our in-house dyno.

Frequently asked questions

What is a DSG remap?
A DSG remap (also called DSG tuning or a TCU remap) involves rewriting the software calibration on your gearbox's transmission control unit. This changes how the gearbox shifts, raises the torque limits the box will accept, and adjusts parameters like torque converter lock-up and launch control. It is separate from an engine ECU remap, though the two are closely related.
Do I need a DSG remap with a Stage 1 engine remap?
Not always, but usually yes if you want the engine remap to perform properly. A Stage 1 engine remap increases torque output. If the DSG calibration has a torque limit below that new output, the TCU will cap the power the engine can deliver through the drivetrain. Pairing both remaps means the gearbox is calibrated to accept, and work with, the engine's new output.
How much does a DSG remap cost?
We do not publish prices because the cost varies depending on the gearbox type, whether you are combining it with an engine remap, and the vehicle. Contact us on 0161 302 5117 or via our website and we will give you a straightforward quote for your specific car.
Will a DSG remap affect my warranty?
Yes, it is likely to. Any remap, engine or gearbox, will typically void the manufacturer's powertrain warranty once detected. This is a common consideration for anyone modifying their vehicle. If your car is still under a manufacturer or dealer warranty, we would recommend weighing that up before proceeding. We are happy to talk through the implications for your specific situation if you call us.
