Astra J VXR, 2.0T A20NFT

The Astra J VXR carries Vauxhall's A20NFT turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 280bhp in factory trim. The engine is robust, the turbocharger has good airflow capacity, and Vauxhall's factory calibration leaves a clear margin between what the hardware can support and what the ECU permits.

At Stage 1, calibration only, no hardware modifications required, a dyno-developed remap on the A20NFT typically returns around 350bhp. The torque gains are proportionally larger than the power gains, and it is the torque that changes the car's character most noticeably. Mid-range pull becomes considerably stronger, and the gap between the VXR and more expensive contemporaries narrows significantly.

Stage 2 is where the Astra J VXR becomes properly fast. With an uprated front-mount intercooler and a freer-flowing induction kit in place, the A20NFT can support output above 410bhp with the appropriate calibration. This requires a dedicated dyno session to develop safely. We run the car at multiple load points, verify the fuelling and knock margins across the full range, and confirm the result before the session ends.

Astra H VXR, Z20LEH

The Astra H VXR uses the Z20LEH engine, a different unit with its own calibration characteristics. It is an older platform but one with a loyal following and meaningful gain potential. We cover the H VXR alongside the J, contact us with your specific car's details when enquiring.

Why the Astra VXR gets overlooked, and why that matters

The Astra VXR has never had the marketing weight of equivalent cars from Ford, Volkswagen or Mercedes. That has kept values low and kept the car out of conversations where it belongs. From a tuning perspective, it means there is less pressure on the owner to buy into expensive packages or prestige workshop prices to access proper performance.

A Stage 2 Astra J VXR with a dyno-developed map at 410bhp is a genuinely fast road car. It costs a fraction of what a comparable output would cost on a platform with a bigger following. The platform has the headroom, the hardware is available, and the calibration work required to unlock it is straightforward in experienced hands.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on the Astra J VXR?
Stage 1 is a calibration-only remap with no hardware changes. The standard turbocharger, intercooler and intake remain in place. Stage 2 involves fitting an uprated intercooler and induction kit before developing a new calibration to suit the increased airflow capacity. The power difference between the two stages is substantial.
Does the Astra H VXR respond as well to remapping as the J?

Is the A20NFT reliable enough for Stage 2 power levels?
