The B48/B46 across Cooper S generations

The Cooper S has run BMW Group's 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder across more than one generation, producing between 176 and 192 bhp depending on which Mini generation and state of tune the car has. Earlier cars use the B46 designation, later ones the B48, and while the two share the same underlying architecture, the factory calibration and supporting hardware differ enough between them that they shouldn't be treated as identical remap projects. What both share is a factory map set conservatively to cover multiple markets and fuel grades, and that's exactly where the genuine Stage 1 headroom sits.

Stage 1 calibration at Manchester Dyno Centre is developed and verified on the 4WD Bapro dynamometer, checked against your car's own baseline pull rather than an assumed figure.

Why Cooper S remapping needs a specialist

The B48 and B46 engines are shared across a wide range of BMW Group models, but that doesn't mean every remap on them is interchangeable. The Cooper S runs its own specific state of tune, its own supporting hardware and, on the front-wheel-drive platform it uses, its own traction characteristics that a calibration needs to respect. A generic file built for a different B48 application, such as a BMW model on a different drivetrain layout, is a real risk here. This vehicle is remapped in person, via Kess3 or CMD, at our Eccles facility only. Every Cooper S calibration is built against your specific car's own data on the dyno, not loaded from a shared library file.

Every service available on the Cooper S

Stage 1 is available across both B46 and B48-engined Cooper S generations. Stage 2 is available where supporting hardware, such as an upgraded intercooler and intake, is fitted, and we'll advise honestly on whether it's worth pursuing for your car. Transmission calibration is available alongside the engine remap on automatic models. An economy-focused remap is available for owners who want lower running costs from daily driving. Standalone rolling road sessions are available for a baseline pull or a post-modification check. For the enthusiast owner, a flame tune, pops and bangs on the overrun, can be coded in for private, off-road use.

Gearbox

The Cooper S is available with either a manual gearbox or an automatic transmission, and on automatic models a gearbox recalibration is available alongside the engine remap. This sharpens shift points and reduces hesitation under load, and it's a popular addition for owners who want the car to feel more decisive when driven with intent rather than left in comfort settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stage 2 available on the B48?
Stage 2 is available on the Cooper S where supporting hardware is fitted. We'll assess your specific car's engine, condition and generation before recommending it.
Do you remap the automatic gearbox alongside the engine?
Yes. Transmission calibration is available on automatic Cooper S models, sharpening shift response and reducing hesitation under load.
How long does a Cooper S remap take?
Most Stage 1 sessions, including baseline pull, calibration and verification runs, are completed within a few hours. We'll confirm exact timing for your specific generation when you book.
Will the remap affect the driving modes?
No. The remap recalibrates the engine's fuelling, boost and ignition strategy. The car's driving modes continue to work as Mini designed them, adjusting throttle mapping and steering weight on top of the new calibration rather than being altered by it.
Do you cover both the B46 and B48-engined Cooper S?
Yes. Both generations are supported, with the calibration developed specifically around whichever engine and state of tune your Cooper S has.
