The FA24 flat-four
The BRZ runs Subaru's FA24 2.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-four, producing 231 bhp from the factory. This is the same engine found in the Toyota GR86, built jointly by the two manufacturers and sharing its core architecture across both badges, a genuine platform relationship rather than a marketing line.
We will be direct about what that means for a remap. There is no turbo on this engine, so a calibration cannot open up boost the way it can on the FA24's turbocharged relatives elsewhere in Subaru's range. What a Stage 1 calibration can do is refine timing and fuelling, sharpening throttle response and smoothing the delivery through the rev range, a genuine but modest improvement rather than the kind of jump a boosted engine delivers. for the exact refinement achievable, but do not expect a large bhp figure on a naturally aspirated engine, and we would rather tell you that now than oversell the car.
Why BRZ remapping needs a specialist
A naturally aspirated engine still rewards a properly developed calibration, it just rewards it differently to a turbo car. Samuel Gunnell develops every BRZ calibration from a baseline pull specific to that car, reading the ECU via Kess3 or CMD bench tooling at Eccles. This is in-person work only, there is no remote flashing platform for Subaru on this site. Finding genuine, usable gains on the FA24 means understanding exactly where the factory calibration is conservative in timing and fuelling, not applying a generic file and hoping something changes.
Every service available on the BRZ
Stage 1 calibration on the FA24 is a refinement exercise, honestly framed, and it is not the only work available. A standalone rolling road session, without any remap attached, is a genuinely useful option on a naturally aspirated car, giving you a documented baseline figure whether or not you go ahead with a remap. Economy remapping is worth considering for owners who want smoother throttle response for daily driving. Launch control coding is available on cars specified with it from the factory. We do not offer a Stage 2 programme on the naturally aspirated FA24, there is no supporting hardware pathway on this engine that would justify one.
Gearbox
The BRZ is available with a manual or an automatic transmission. We do not currently offer a specific gearbox remap on either, the manual has no TCU to recalibrate and the automatic's factory calibration is well matched to the naturally aspirated engine's characteristics. Contact us if you would like to discuss your specific car's transmission in more detail.
