Why the 4WD dyno matters for the Defender

The Defender is built for permanent four-wheel drive in a way few road-focused SUVs are, and that has a direct consequence for how it can be tuned properly. Most rolling roads are two-wheel-drive rigs that can only drive one axle at a time. Put a permanently four-wheel-drive vehicle like the Defender on one of those and you either run the vehicle in a mode it was never designed to operate in on the road, or you're working with data from an axle that isn't loaded the way it would be under real driving conditions. Neither gives a calibration developed against accurate data.

Our Bapro dynamometer drives all four wheels at once, so the baseline pull and the verification pulls that follow happen with the drivetrain doing exactly what it does on the road. For a vehicle built around genuine off-road and towing capability as much as on-road performance, that isn't a nice-to-have, it's how the job should be done.

How we map the Defender

We begin with a baseline pull on the 4WD Bapro dyno to record precisely what your Defender's engine is producing before any calibration work starts. The ECU is read and the existing map assessed, then a calibration is developed specifically for your vehicle's condition and the electric-supercharger-assisted straight-six it's running. Once the new map is applied, we run verification pulls back to back on the same rollers, confirming the figures hold under the same load conditions as the baseline.

Every service available beyond the Stage 1 map

Stage 1 developed on the dyno is the starting point for most Defender sessions, but the menu goes further. Stage 2 is available where supporting hardware suits the extra load. An economy-focused calibration is available for owners covering long distances or towing regularly, aimed at reducing fuel costs without giving up the character of the vehicle. Gearbox recalibration is available for sharper, more decisive shift behaviour, particularly relevant when the engine is also being remapped. Standalone rolling road sessions are available for a baseline pull or a post-modification check.

Stage 1 vs Stage 2

Stage 1 on the Defender P400 is software only. It recalibrates fuelling, boost and the electric-supercharger strategy within what the standard hardware supports, and for most owners it delivers the bulk of the usable gain. Stage 2 asks more of supporting hardware and unlocks further headroom once that's fitted. We'll advise honestly on whether Stage 2 makes sense for your specific vehicle and how you use it, rather than push it as a default.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't a two-roller dyno test my Defender properly?
A two-roller rig can only drive one axle at a time. Run a permanently four-wheel-drive vehicle like the Defender on one and you either force it into a mode it wasn't built to run in on the road, or you're working with an unloaded axle. Our 4WD Bapro dyno loads all four wheels simultaneously, giving a figure that reflects how the vehicle actually drives.
How long does the dyno session itself take?
A full Stage 1 session including baseline pull, calibration and verification runs typically takes a few hours. We'll confirm exact timing for your Defender when you book.
Do you use my car's actual data or a generic file?
Your Defender's own data. The baseline pull tells us exactly what your specific vehicle is producing, and the calibration is built from that, not loaded from a generic Ingenium file developed on a different vehicle.
What happens if the dyno run shows a problem with my car?
We stop and tell you. If the baseline pull reveals an underlying issue, we flag it before continuing rather than calibrate around a fault that needs addressing first.
Can I book a rolling road session on my Defender without a remap?
Yes. Standalone dyno sessions are available for a baseline figure, a post-modification check, or a straightforward power run.
