Mercedes A45 AMG and A35 AMG remap

The M139 engine in the A45 AMG holds a distinction no other road car currently matches: it is the most powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged production engine ever built. At 421bhp in A45 S specification, Mercedes-AMG have pushed the architecture close to its engineering limit at the factory. What is notable for remapping purposes is that the ECU calibration still contains meaningful headroom, and on the 4WD Bapro dynamometer at Manchester Dyno Centre, that headroom is measurable.

A35 AMG, M260 2.0T

The A35 AMG runs the M260 engine rather than the flagship M139, and it is a strong starting point in its own right. Factory output is 306bhp with 400Nm of torque. A Stage 1 calibration developed on the dyno brings that to approximately 380bhp, with a torque figure that transforms the mid-range delivery. The A35 is a quick car in standard form. Remapped, the gap between it and more expensive machinery narrows considerably.

The A35 uses the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. That is a key reason why a 4WD dynamometer is not optional here, it is essential. A two-wheel-drive roller cannot load the car correctly. Our Bapro dyno is designed to run 4Matic cars as they are intended to operate.

A45 AMG, M139 2.0T

The A45 in standard AMG specification produces 387bhp. It is already a fast car. On the dyno, a Stage 1 remap takes that to the 450 to 470bhp range depending on the individual vehicle's condition and the ambient conditions on the day. Torque gains are significant and the delivery through the DCT gearbox is noticeably more direct.

The M139 responds to calibration in a particular way. The engine's architecture is sophisticated, and the factory mapping is conservative in certain load ranges to protect the drivetrain across a wide range of operating conditions worldwide. A map developed for the specific conditions the car actually runs in can be considerably more precise, and that precision is what delivers the gain safely.

The A45 S takes the M139 to 421bhp in standard form. Stage 1 remapping on the S pushes output above 490bhp, making it one of the most significant gains available on a compact AMG without hardware modification. The car is already operating at a high base, so the development process on the dyno is thorough. We run multiple load sweeps, check knock margins carefully, and confirm the calibration is stable before the session closes.

The case for 4WD dyno testing

Every A-Class AMG covered here uses 4Matic all-wheel drive. Running a 4Matic car on a single-axle dyno produces inaccurate figures and can place the drivetrain under abnormal stress. Our 4WD Bapro dynamometer loads all four driven wheels simultaneously, which means the torque vectoring and all-wheel-drive management systems operate normally throughout the session. The numbers you receive reflect what the car actually produces.

Is the M139 engine safe to remap?
The M139 is a sophisticated, heavily engineered unit. In the hands of an experienced tuner with proper dyno equipment, remapping is safe. The key is that the map must be developed carefully, with knock margins and fuelling checked at each load point. We do this as standard on every session.
Does the 4Matic system affect how the remap works?
The 4Matic system affects how you must test the car, not how it is mapped. A 4WD dyno allows the all-wheel-drive system to operate normally during testing. Remapping the ECU calibration itself addresses the engine management, and the power is distributed by the drivetrain as normal once it is delivered.
Can you remap the DCT gearbox as well as the engine?
