Mercedes C63 AMG remap
Two very different engines have carried the C63 AMG name. The W204 used AMG's celebrated M156 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8. The W205 switched to the M177 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, a fundamentally different architecture that responds to calibration in a very different way. W204 C63 AMG, M156 6.2 V8
The M156 is a naturally aspirated engine in an era that had largely moved to forced induction for performance cars. It produces 457bhp from 6.2 litres without a turbocharger in sight, and it has a character that no turbocharged engine can fully replicate. Remapping a naturally aspirated engine is a different process to turbocharged work. There is no boost pressure to adjust. The gains come from optimising ignition timing, throttle mapping and variable valve timing parameters across the rev range.
On the M156, a well-developed Stage 1 remap typically takes output to around 490bhp. The gains are felt most in the upper half of the rev range where the engine's natural character lives. Low-end torque delivery also sharpens, which makes the car considerably more responsive in daily use. For an engine already held in high regard, it is a worthwhile step.
W205 C63 AMG, M177 4.0T biturbo
The W205 introduced the M177, and the shift to forced induction opened up a different kind of tuning headroom. Starting from 476bhp in standard C63 specification, a Stage 1 remap on the M177 takes output to approximately 550bhp. The torque gain at this stage is substantial, and the delivery through the AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox becomes noticeably more immediate.
The M177 is an engine that responds extremely well to mapping. Mercedes-AMG calibrate it conservatively at the factory to accommodate global fuel quality variation and broad market warranty requirements. A map developed specifically for the car in front of us, on the fuel it actually runs on, can be considerably more precise in every respect.
AMG Speedshift DCT and MCT gearbox remap
Transmission remapping is available alongside the engine calibration on W205 C63 models. The Speedshift gearbox has its own TCU, and recalibrating it to suit the increased engine output and the driver's preferences makes a significant difference to how the powertrain feels as a complete system. Shift speeds, torque management during shifts, and gear-hold strategies can all be addressed.
W205 C63 S AMG, M177 at 510bhp
The C63 S version of the W205 takes the M177 to 510bhp in standard form. The Stage 1 gain profile is similar in character to the standard C63, with output moving to around 590bhp on the dyno. At this level, the development session is detailed. We run multiple load sweeps and check every parameter carefully before signing off.
Our approach to C63 remapping
Regardless of which generation you bring in, the process is the same. The car arrives, we carry out a visual and mechanical assessment, and we run a baseline on the Bapro before touching the calibration. Samuel Gunnell, with over ten years of professional experience, writes every map from that baseline. Nothing is written at a desk and read off a list. The map is developed on the car, confirmed on the car, and verified by the dyno trace before the session ends.
