Mk3 Focus ST, 2.0 EcoBoost

The Mk3 ST arrived with Ford's 2.0 EcoBoost producing 250bhp from the factory. It is a capable engine, but Ford left a significant margin on the table with the standard ECU calibration. With a Stage 1 remap, no hardware changes required, we routinely see figures in the region of 310bhp and corresponding torque gains confirmed on the dyno.

The 2.0 EcoBoost responds well to careful ignition and boost pressure optimisation. Samuel Gunnell develops each map to suit the individual vehicle, factoring in its service history, any modifications already present, and the fuel quality it runs on. Nothing is applied generically.

Mk4 Focus ST, 2.3 EcoBoost

The Mk4 moved to the larger 2.3 EcoBoost, the same block that underpins the Focus RS, and the gains available reflect that extra displacement. Starting from 280bhp in standard form, a Stage 1 remap on a well-maintained Mk4 ST will typically return around 360bhp on the dyno, with a meaningful step up in mid-range torque that transforms the in-gear response.

Stage 2 is where the Mk4 platform becomes genuinely serious. With supporting hardware, an uprated intercooler, a freer-flowing intake and an appropriate exhaust, a purpose-built Stage 2 calibration on the 2.3 EcoBoost can take output above 430bhp. At that level the car requires a thorough dyno session to develop the map safely across the full rev and load range. That is exactly the process we follow.

Why dyno verification matters on the Focus ST

The Focus ST community is not short of off-the-shelf maps. What separates a dyno-developed map from a downloaded one is accountability. We pull the car onto the Bapro, run it through its paces at multiple load points, and confirm that the calibration is safe and that the power figures are real. You can see the trace. You can see where the gains are. If anything looks inconsistent we tune further before the car leaves.

This is particularly important on the 2.3 EcoBoost at Stage 2, where the interaction between an upgraded intercooler, modified intake and the new calibration needs to be validated rather than assumed.

Samuel Gunnell has been remapping vehicles professionally for over a decade. The Focus ST platform, across both generations, is one he knows in detail. Every map he writes is developed from a baseline run on the day, not carried over from a previous session on a different car.

Manchester Dyno Centre operates from Eccles, Manchester, Manchester M30 0SF. We do not do mobile remapping. The 4WD Bapro dyno is on site, and every map produced here is verified on it.

What stage of remap is right for my Focus ST?
Stage 1 suits cars in standard, well-maintained condition and requires no hardware modifications. If your Mk4 ST already has or is planning an intercooler upgrade and freer intake, Stage 2 is the logical next step and is developed on the dyno to suit those exact parts.
Is the Focus ST remap done on a rolling road?
Yes. Every map at Manchester Dyno Centre is developed and verified on our 4WD Bapro dynamometer. We do not apply off-the-shelf calibrations.
Do you cover both the Mk3 and Mk4 Focus ST?
We cover both generations. The Mk3 2.0 EcoBoost and the Mk4 2.3 EcoBoost each have distinct calibration profiles and we approach them accordingly.
