Audi RS4 and S4 remap

The B9 RS4 and S4 are two of the strongest remap platforms in the current Audi range. Both are fitted with turbocharged V6 engines that the factory calibration keeps well within their limits. The headroom above the standard map is substantial, and it is headroom that delivers real-world driving improvement, not just bigger numbers on a datasheet.

Audi RS4 B9, 2.9 TFSI V6 biturbo

The RS4 B9 uses the 2.9-litre TFSI V6 in twin-turbocharged configuration, producing 450 bhp as standard. It is an engine built for performance: the block, head and turbocharger specification are meaningfully different from the 3.0 TFSI in the S4, and the calibration has correspondingly more headroom to exploit.

Stage 1 remapping at Manchester Dyno Centre takes verified output to approximately 530 bhp. The method matters here. We run baseline dyno pulls first, confirm the car is operating correctly and that fuel, ignition and knock parameters are all where they should be, then develop the map and return to the dyno to confirm the result. The figure we quote is the figure the car produces on our equipment, not an average from a calibration database.

The character of the 2.9 TFSI changes noticeably at Stage 1 output. The torque curve becomes more linear and arrives earlier. The overtaking capability on a single carriageway road moves into the kind of territory that is genuinely useful rather than impressive on paper. This is a proper performance upgrade on a platform that was already fast.

Audi S4 B9, 3.0 TFSI V6

The S4 B9 uses the 3.0-litre TFSI single-turbocharged V6, producing 354 bhp in standard specification. The gap between standard output and what this engine will reliably hold is considerable. Stage 1 calibration takes verified power to approximately 440 bhp, an 86 bhp gain on a car that was already composed and fast.

The S4 is a broader proposition than the RS4, it is bought as a practical estate or saloon that happens to have a V6 petrol, and owners tend to use it for exactly that. Stage 1 remapping preserves all of that usability while adding a level of in-gear performance that makes the car significantly more capable on a motorway overtake or an open road.

Economy and power characteristics improve together at Stage 1 on the S4, the more accurate fuelling and torque delivery across the rev range means the engine is working more efficiently at part-load as well as producing more at full throttle.

ZF 8-speed gearbox remap

Both the RS4 and S4 B9 are fitted with the ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. It is a strong, well-regarded unit, but it is calibrated from the factory to work with standard engine output. Once the engine is remapped, the gearbox is working with different torque figures than it was designed for, and the shift programming has not changed to reflect that.

We remap the ZF 8-speed gearbox ECU alongside the engine as a combined service. Shift speed, shift points, torque limiter thresholds, kickdown behaviour and launch control parameters are all adjusted. The result is a powertrain that feels like a single coherent system rather than an engine upgrade bolted onto a factory gearbox calibration.

Why 4WD dyno verification matters here

The RS4 and S4 are Quattro vehicles. Both axles are driven under normal operating conditions. Measuring or calibrating either car on a two-roller dynamometer means operating the car outside its normal drivetrain configuration, which introduces inaccuracy into both the baseline measurement and the calibration process.

Our 4WD Bapro dynamometer loads all four wheels simultaneously. Every power figure we produce from the RS4 and S4 reflects what the car actually produces through all four wheels in the mode it normally operates. This is the only honest way to work on an AWD platform.

What is the difference between remapping the RS4 and the S4?
The engines are different units, the 2.9 TFSI biturbo in the RS4 has a different architecture, different turbocharger specification and different headroom than the 3.0 TFSI single-turbo in the S4. The calibration approach and expected outcome differ accordingly.
Do you cover Avant estate variants as well as saloons?
Yes. The mechanical specification relevant to remapping is identical across saloon and Avant variants. The engine and gearbox ECUs are the same.
