The B58 in the M240i

The M240i runs BMW's B58 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six, producing 374 bhp from the factory and available with either rear-wheel drive or xDrive depending on spec. It is the same engine family that underpins a wide range of BMW's current six-cylinder line-up, and the factory calibration on it is set conservatively, the way any engine sold across markets with different fuel quality and climates has to be.

. What is well established on the B58 more broadly is that it responds strongly to a properly developed software calibration, with the mid-range torque curve being where most of the improvement is felt rather than purely at the top end.

Why B58 remapping needs a specialist

The B58 is one of the platforms we map remotely at Manchester Dyno Centre, using Bootmod3 or MHD to read and write the calibration through the OBD port. That is a genuine convenience for M240i owners, but it does not remove the need for a specialist behind the tool. A generic file written for a different market's fuel or a different state of tune is still a real risk on an engine producing this much boost from the factory. Samuel Gunnell develops and verifies every B58 calibration on the 4WD Bapro dyno before it goes anywhere near a customer's car as a finished map.

The convenience of a remote tool is only as good as what has been verified behind it. A file that has not been proven on this specific engine and market fuel is a shortcut, not a calibration, and that distinction is exactly what separates a specialist workshop from an app on its own.

Every service available on the M240i

Stage 1 covers most M240i owners' needs and is available remotely via Bootmod3 or MHD, or in person at Eccles. Stage 2 is available where supporting hardware is fitted, and we will advise honestly on whether it suits your car. An economy remap is available for owners who want better consumption rather than more power. We remap the ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox alongside the engine, launch control is codeable on xDrive cars, and a standalone rolling road session is available without a full remap. The flame tune option also suits the M240i for enthusiast, track-day use within the usual legal off-road framing.

Automatic gearbox remapping

The M240i's ZF eight-speed automatic is remapped alongside the engine as a combined service. Shift speed, shift points and launch control on xDrive cars are all adjustable, so the gearbox responds to the engine's new output rather than the factory setting calibrated for standard power.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stage 2 available on the B58?
Yes, where supporting hardware is fitted. We will advise honestly on whether it suits your M240i and how you use it before recommending it over Stage 1.
Do you remap the ZF gearbox alongside the engine?
Yes. Shift speed, shift points and launch control on xDrive cars are all adjustable as part of a combined engine and gearbox remap.
How long does an M240i remap take?
A remote Stage 1 session via Bootmod3 or MHD can be quicker than an in-person bench remap; either way we will confirm a realistic timeframe when you book.
Will the remap affect the M240i's driving modes?
The remap adjusts engine output and, where relevant, gearbox behaviour. The car's factory drive modes continue to function as normal, just with more power available to call on.
Do you cover the M240i xDrive as well as the rear-wheel-drive version?
Yes. The B58 remap process is the same regardless of drivetrain. Tell us your exact spec when booking so we can confirm the right approach.
