Two very different cars share this badge. The 540i (G30, from 2017) runs the B58 straight-six at 335 bhp, while the M550i xDrive (G30, 2017 to 2020) runs the S63 twin-turbo V8 at 523 bhp. These are separate calibration jobs entirely, and we confirm exactly which one is on the dyno before quoting a figure for either. Treating them as interchangeable, as some generic online price lists do, is exactly the kind of shortcut that produces a poorly matched map.

What the gain feels like

On the 540i, the B58's extra mid-range shows up as a noticeably fuller torque delivery from lower revs, useful in a saloon this size where effortless overtaking matters more than outright top-end numbers. On the M550i, the S63 V8 already produces serious torque from the factory, and the calibration work is about sharpening throttle response and extending the usable power band rather than transforming the character of the car. Both feel more alert pulling away, not just faster at the top of the rev range, which is where most 5 Series driving actually happens.

Every service available on the 5 Series

Stage 1 is available on both the 540i and M550i, remotely via Bootmod3 or MHD where the platform allows, or in person at Eccles. Stage 2 is available on either engine where supporting hardware is fitted, and we will advise honestly on suitability. An economy remap is popular on the 540i in particular given how many are used for high motorway mileage, while M550i owners more often ask about outright pace. We remap the automatic gearbox alongside the engine, and a standalone rolling road session is available without a full remap.

Dyno proof for this platform

The M550i's M xDrive system needs the same four-roller treatment as any BMW xDrive car. A two-roller rig cannot load it properly without forcing a non-standard operating mode. The 540i, whether rear-wheel drive or xDrive depending on spec, gets the same load-simulated pull on our 4WD Bapro dyno, producing a repeatable, documented figure rather than a road estimate, so the numbers in the table above mean something.

98 RON is recommended following Stage 1 on either engine. We will confirm fuel requirements with you when you book.
Is Stage 2 worth it over Stage 1 on a 5 Series?
