The B58 in the X4

The X4 M40i shares its B58 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six and xDrive drivetrain with the BMW X3. The two are effectively the same platform under different bodywork, and both get exactly the same calibration approach here. Factory output on the B58 in this application is 355 bhp on the pre-facelift car (2018 to 2021), rising to 382 bhp on the facelifted, mild-hybrid-assisted version from 2022 onward, and xDrive is standard across the range.

. As with the X3, the B58's factory calibration is set conservatively to cover a wide range of markets and fuel qualities, and there is real headroom above it once the boost and fuelling are mapped properly rather than pushed harder without regard for how xDrive is actually distributing torque.

Owners sometimes assume the X4's coupe-like roofline changes how the car should be calibrated compared with the X3. It does not. The powertrain and drivetrain are shared in full, and the only difference that matters here is badge and bodywork, not anything under the skin that a remap needs to account for.

Why B58 remapping needs a specialist

The B58 is one of the platforms mapped remotely at Manchester Dyno Centre, using Bootmod3 or MHD through the OBD port, which is a genuine convenience for X4 owners who do not want to leave the car with us for an extended bench session. That convenience does not remove the need for a specialist behind the tool. A generic file built for a different market's fuel is still a real risk on an engine running this much factory boost. Every calibration is developed and verified on the 4WD Bapro dyno before it is treated as a finished map.

Every service available on the X4

Stage 1 is available on the X4 remotely via Bootmod3 or MHD, or in person at Eccles if preferred. Stage 2 is available where supporting hardware is fitted, and we will advise honestly on suitability rather than push it by default. An economy remap suits owners covering higher motorway mileage. We remap the automatic gearbox alongside the engine, and a standalone rolling road session is available without a full remap. As with the X3, launch control is codeable and adjustable where the car is specified with it from the factory.

Automatic gearbox remapping

The X4 M40i's automatic gearbox is remapped alongside the engine as a combined service. Shift speed and shift points are adjusted so the transmission suits the engine's new output rather than the factory setting calibrated for standard power.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stage 2 available on the B58?
Yes, where supporting hardware is fitted. We will advise honestly on whether it suits your X4 before recommending it over Stage 1.
Do you remap the automatic gearbox alongside the engine?
Yes, as a combined service, adjusting shift speed and shift points to suit the engine's new output.
How long does an X4 remap take?
A remote Stage 1 session via Bootmod3 or MHD can be quicker than an in-person bench remap; we will confirm a realistic timeframe when you book either way.
Will the remap affect the X4's driving modes or xDrive?
The remap adjusts engine output, not the mechanical operation of xDrive or the car's factory drive modes, which continue to function as normal.
Do you cover the X4 as well as the X3, given they share the same platform?
Yes. Both run the same B58 engine and xDrive drivetrain, and we map both to the same standard on the same dyno at Eccles.
