M cars demand a different level of precision. The S55 and S58 engines that power the M2, M3 and M4 are purpose-built performance units with tight tolerances and sophisticated engine management systems. Tuning them well requires expertise, proper equipment and a measured approach, not an afternoon with a generic file. At Manchester Dyno Centre, every M car remap is developed and verified on our 4WD Bapro dynamometer by Samuel Gunnell, a tuner with over ten years of experience and an international reputation specifically in high-performance BMW calibration.

The S55 generation

The S55 twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six is fitted to three models:

M2 Competition (F87), 410 bhp from the factory. The Competition variant uses the full S55 unit, and the results on Stage 1 calibration are consistent. Verified Stage 1 output sits in the 480 to 510 bhp range depending on condition, supporting hardware and ambient conditions on the day. The M2 Competition is a compact, rear-drive car, the added torque transforms the way it drives at road speeds.

M3 F80, 431 bhp. The F80 remains one of the strongest platforms in the S55 era. Stage 1 calibration brings it into the same 480 to 510 bhp bracket as the M2 Competition. The manual gearbox option on the F80 makes it a particularly involving car at these power levels.

M4 F82, 431 bhp. Shares the S55 with the F80 and responds identically to calibration. Output, tuneable range and the mapping approach are the same across both cars.

The S58 generation

The S58 is BMW M's current straight-six, introduced with the G-series M cars. It is a more advanced unit than the S55 and carries significantly more headroom from the factory calibration.

M2 G87, 460 bhp. The G87 M2 is the newest car in the M2 line and uses the S58 for the first time in that body. Stage 1 mapping brings it to the 560 to 600 bhp range, a substantial gain that changes the character of the car noticeably. The G87 is already a point-and-shoot weapon; on a Stage 1 remap it becomes something else entirely.

M3 G80, 503 bhp. The G80 M3 in standard Competition specification arrives at 503 bhp. Stage 1 calibration takes verified output to 560 to 600 bhp depending on the car. The G80 is available in rear-wheel drive and xDrive configurations, both are mappable, and the xDrive variant benefits significantly from the 4WD Bapro dyno when running full power verification.

M4 G82, 503 bhp. Identical S58 specification to the G80 M3. The same calibration approach and the same Stage 1 results apply. The G82 is the coupe derivative and shares every relevant mechanical characteristic for the purposes of remapping.

Why dyno verification matters on M cars

A generic remap applied without dyno verification is a gamble. On a standard platform, a family hatchback, a workhorse diesel, the consequences of an imprecise calibration are limited. On an M car running 500-plus brake horsepower through a precision-engineered drivetrain, the margin for error is much smaller.

Every M car that comes through Manchester Dyno Centre is placed on the 4WD Bapro dynamometer before any calibration work begins. We establish a baseline, confirm the car is running correctly, develop and apply the map, then run back-to-back power pulls to confirm the result. The numbers on screen are the numbers the engine is producing. Not estimates. Not assumptions.

Samuel Gunnell's specialism in M car tuning means the calibration approach accounts for the specific behaviours of each S55 and S58 variant, not just the headline boost target, but injection timing, fuel trims, load site resolution and thermal management under sustained load. This is not a process you can replicate over the OBD port in a car park.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stage 2 available on S55 and S58 cars?
Stage 2 is possible with supporting hardware, upgraded intercooler, intake system and downpipe. We will assess the car and advise whether Stage 2 is appropriate and what supporting work is needed before we proceed.
Do you remap the M DCT gearbox?
Yes. The M DCT and ZF 8-speed units fitted across the M range can be calibrated alongside the engine, shift speed, shift points, and launch control parameters can all be adjusted.
How long does an M car remap take?
Allow a full day. M car calibration is not a quick OBD flash. The development and verification process takes time, and we do not rush it.
Will it affect the M Driving modes?
The remap works within the existing mode structure. Sport and Sport+ modes will reflect the gains, the power increase is present across all modes but most notable where the throttle mapping is sharpest.
Do you cover Competition Pack and CS variants?
