BMW X3 remap
Every X3 M40i is calibrated on our 4WD Bapro dyno, the only way to load xDrive properly. See the full range of BMW remapping we cover, or call 0161 302 5117 to discuss your car.
Why the 4WD dyno matters for the X3
xDrive is standard on the M40i, and that is exactly why a two-roller dyno cannot test this car properly. Put an xDrive car on a rig built for a two-wheel-drive hatchback and you either lock an axle it should not run without or force it into a non-standard test mode. Neither gives you a real number. Our 4WD Bapro dynamometer loads all four wheels the way the B58 actually sends drive to them through xDrive, so the baseline pull, the map and the verification runs all reflect how the car drives on the road.
How we map the X3
A session starts with a baseline pull on the rollers, establishing what your specific car produces before anything is touched. The B58's ECU is read and mapped remotely using Bootmod3 or MHD where the platform allows, or in person via Kess3 and CMD at Eccles if you prefer the bench approach. The calibration is developed against your car's actual baseline data, not a generic file. Verification pulls follow straight after on the same rollers, giving a genuine before-and-after comparison from the same session on the same equipment, not a different rig on a different day.
Beyond the Stage 1 map developed on the dyno
Stage 1 is software only and covers most X3 M40i owners' needs. Beyond that, we remap the automatic gearbox alongside the engine, adjusting shift speed and shift points to suit the engine's new output. An economy remap is available for owners who want better consumption rather than more power, and a standalone rolling road session is available if you want a baseline pull without a full remap. The BMW X4 shares this same B58 and xDrive platform, and both cars go through an identical process here, so if you are cross-shopping the two, the calibration outcome is not a differentiator between them.
Stage 1 vs Stage 2
Stage 1 on the M40i's B58 delivers a genuinely strong gain from software alone. The exact factory output varies by model year: 355 bhp on the pre-facelift car (2018 to 2021), rising to 382 bhp on the facelifted, mild-hybrid-assisted version from 2022 onward. Stage 2 needs supporting hardware, typically an upgraded intercooler and exhaust, to unlock further headroom safely, and we will advise honestly rather than recommend it by default.
