BMW X5 remap
The BMW X5 is a full xDrive four-wheel-drive vehicle. That single fact determines everything about how it should be tuned and measured, and it is why most dyno facilities in the UK cannot do this job properly. A two-wheel-drive rolling road cannot spin all four wheels simultaneously. On a 4WD vehicle, that means you are either locking out the rear axle and running the car in an operating mode it was not designed for, or you are not measuring it at all.
At Manchester Dyno Centre we run a 4WD Bapro dynamometer. The X5 goes on in its standard operating configuration, all four wheels turning, and we develop and verify the remap on real power figures from the actual drivetrain. This is the only way to do it correctly.
X5 variants we remap
F15 and G05 xDrive30d, B57 engine The B57 six-cylinder diesel is an excellent platform for remapping. It is smooth, torque-rich from low revs and has a calibration that clearly prioritises refinement over output. Stage 1 work on the B57 delivers a noticeable improvement in in-gear thrust and overtaking ability without altering the composed character that makes the X5 a capable long-distance car. Economy remapping is also available for high-mileage users.
F15 xDrive40d, N57 engine The N57 triple-turbo diesel is one of the more interesting diesel platforms to tune. Three turbochargers operating in a sequential configuration means the torque delivery characteristics are different to a conventional twin-turbo setup, and the calibration reflects that. Stage 1 remapping on the N57 X5 delivers meaningful gains in the mid-range and top end, with the character of the engine remaining smooth and linear throughout.
X5 M, S63 engine, 575 bhp The X5 M is a different proposition entirely. The S63 twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 in its current specification produces 575 bhp from the factory, and it is a performance-focused unit with considerably more capability than the standard calibration allows. Remapping the X5 M requires a precise approach, the engine management system is significantly more complex than the diesel units, and the outputs involved mean there is less room for imprecision.
Every X5 M remap at Manchester Dyno Centre is carried out by Samuel Gunnell and verified on the 4WD Bapro dyno. We establish a baseline, confirm everything is running correctly, apply the calibration and then confirm the result with measured power figures. You leave with documented output, not an estimate.
The 4WD dyno question
This is worth explaining in more detail, because it matters for anyone researching X5 remapping.
A standard two-roller dynamometer puts the driven wheels on rollers and holds the other end of the car in place. On a rear-wheel-drive car that is fine, the rear wheels drive the rollers, the front wheels sit stationary. On a front-wheel-drive car, the same logic applies in reverse.
On a full-time four-wheel-drive vehicle like the X5, the transfer case and differentials are designed to operate with all four wheels turning at the same speed in normal conditions. If you put only the rear wheels on a two-roller dyno, you are either forcing the front wheels to rotate in the air, which can cause drivetrain stress, or you are using a vehicle mode that bypasses normal 4WD operation. Either way, the power figures you get are not representative of how the car actually drives. And a remap developed under those conditions has not been validated in the way it needs to be.
The 4WD Bapro dynamometer at our Eccles, Manchester facility runs four independent rollers, one at each wheel. The car operates normally. The measurement is accurate. That is the difference.
